My name is Katie Tullia, I live on a 10,000 acre sheep and cattle property near Ellerston NSW with my husband Matt. We use the power and versatility of horses to muster in steep terrain on a regular basis.
I grew up near Canberra and was the horse mad child of the family. My patient mother indulged my passion taking me to every Pony Club event going as a youngster and a teen. From there I progressed to working student and trick rider at Harris Entertainment before moving to the Hunter Valley to work on a thoroughbred broodmare farm.
In 2012, I launched my own business starting young horses under saddle and working with problem horses. I also joined “HighVelocity Trick Riding” as a trick rider, roman rider and liberty performer. We had great fun touring the NSW countryside performing for crowds at agricultural shows, race days and an assortment of other functions. During this time, I also had the opportunity to work for thoroughbred trainer Andrew Macdonald where I started young thoroughbreds for the racetrack and pre trained racehorses. This has given me a well rounded view of the industry and shear admiration for the endurance, intelligence, sensitivity, stamina, versatility and strength of the breed. I have re-educated a number of thoroughbreds retiring from the track and have a strong passion for maximising their quality of life after racing; at one point even launching a website to connect race trainers with re-trainers.
My love of horses, liberty work and the pursuit of biomechanically correct training took me to Hungary in 2016 where I was a working student for Edit Kappel with the Lipizzaner stallions of National Hungarian stud at Marócpuszta. Here I furthered my understanding of developing connection at liberty and commenced my journey in learning the art of Philippe Karl’s Ecole de Légèrete.
“Working Cow Horse” and “Ranch Trail” will be a new and exciting experience for me and I can’t wait to get in and give it my all. I have a diverse and varied history with all things horse and I am looking forward to such a new, exciting and worthwhile challenge that will put my experience thus far to the test. I am both thrilled and honoured to be selected amongst such wonderful Aussie horsewomen to compete in “Race to Ranch”.
