Racing Queensland Race to Ranch Competition

Competitors will be allocated an Off the track Thoroughbred that has been raced within the past 6 months. They will have the horse for a minimum of 100 days prior to Cowgirls Gathering.

Competitors will be demonstrating the trainability and versatility of their thoroughbred with a series of ranch horse challenges.

1. Ranch Trail
2. Working Cowhorse
3. Freestyle

The Ranch Trail class is designed to show the horses willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him during the course of a normal work day on a ranch. This class consists of 7 obstacles and the three gaits of walk, trot, lope.

Three of the obstacles are mandatory at each event:
1) opening, passing through and closing a gate
2) dragging a log
3) dismount, ground tie, drop your bridle and re-bridle, pickup all 4 feet and remount.

The Working Cowhorse competition consists of two parts: prescribed reined work and actual cow work. Judging is based on good manners, smoothness, cow sense and ease of reining. During the cow working phase of the exhibitor’s run, one cow is turned into the arena. The horse is required to hold the cow on the end of the arena.

Freestyle is the competitors opportunity to show off their horse in anyway they wish. They will have a maximum time of 5 minutes in which to demonstrate to the crowd and judges their training skills, mental soundness of their horse and athletic ability… Imagination and entertainment being the key factors.
